In 1831, he failed in business…
1832 - he ran for the Illinois General Assembly. He was defeated, so he started another business and failed.
1834 - he was elected to the state legislature.
1836 - he suffered a nervous breakdown after his sweetheart died.
1838, 1840, and 1843 respectively, he ran for speaker of the state legislature, elector and Congress, and he was defeated each time.
1846 - he was elected to Congress, but when he ran for Congress again in 1848, he was defeated.
1855 - he ran for Senate and was defeated.
1856 - he sought the vice-presidential nomination and was defeated, receiving less than 100 votes.
But here was a man who refused to give up.
In 1860 he ran for President–and won.
This man is no other than Abraham Lincoln - 16th President of the United States.
He was obviously well acquainted with adversity but he just kept at it.
He remained resilient.
